Hans Mägert (son of Melchoir Mägert and Margret Müller) was born July 15, 1690 in Reichenbach, Bern Canton, Switzerland, and died March 24, 1783 in Rockingham County, Virginia. He married Unknown.

The Maggards are of Swiss/German origin. Hans and his brother left from northern Germany to America in early 1700 when they were in their late teens. Hans settled first in Pennsylvania, (per agreement circa 1620, Virginia was considered an authorized area to be settled), then going into Augusta, now Rockingham County, Virginia. As a surveyor and road builder, he found the land around the Shenandoah River very rich. He went back to Pennsylvania and brought his family to the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. He had a large plantation on which he raised wheat and livestock.
