According to Oscar Phillips, Moses had a one third interest in 13, 000 acres of mountain land. In the 1970's his heirs were involved in litigation against the land companies, who they belived had stolen part of the land which Moses had left to his heirs when he died. Moses was a provate in the G Co, 7th Mounted Infantry in the Union Army in the Civil War. He served from Nov. 8, 1864 to July 27, 1865. He was a minister, and served as pastor of Beechfork Baptist Church, and on the 30th day of August 1873, he and Rev. Sterling Adkins organized a church by the name of Pleasant Rest Church at Nicks Creek on the New River. The church was later named Nicks Creek Missionary Baptist Church. Moses Phillips built a log house at the 2300 feet level on the Anderson side of Red Oak Mountain. It is near Red Oak Gap Church. His children and grandchildren lived in the house.
