Galician Ancestors of the Mann/Osiowy Clans of Lemberg, SK

Updated November 6, 2006

About Our Family Research

Much research of both sides of my family tree has been compiled by various relatives. My goal is to consolidate this information and expand and fill blanks in the information bank.

The Mann family immigrated to The North-West Territories (now Saskatchewan) in 1893 along with several other families from Wiesenberg, Galicia (now Ukraine), 30 km north of Lemberg, Galicia (now L'viv, Ukraine). They were german speaking farmers whose roots were in the Rhineland; they settled in Galicia upon the invitation of the Austrian Emperor in the late 1700's.

The polish speaking Osiowy family immigrated to the same area of The North-West Territories in 1898 from Oleszyce, Galicia (now Poland), 150 km northwest of Lemberg, Galicia. They homesteading about 4 miles west of the Mann family.

The closest trading settlement was Pheasant Forks, 12 miles north of the Mann homestead. In 1904, a Canadian Pacific Railway branchline was constructed south of Pheasant Forks, resulting in the creation of a new village. This village, 2 miles north of the Mann homestead, was built on two quarter sections owned by my ancestors: Frank Golling, Jr. and Martin Mann. They were given the priviledge of naming the village and named it Lemberg in honour of the Galician capital, Lemberg.

Lemberg, Saskatchewan is located along Highway 22, 120 km east of Regina and 50 km southwest of Melville.
