Using a combination of family lore, birth and death records and records from the Federal census, one of my second cousins and I found that our great-grandfather William H. Mansfield (known as ‘Billy’) was born November 10,1854, in Barren County, Kentucky, and died January 19, 1916. He was buried in the Mt. Pleasant, KY cemetery. Also the census records show Billy’s younger sister, Sallie, who was born in 1856.
In 1880, Billy married Delpha Lewis (which some records spell as Delphia). She was called ‘Duffy’. Our great-grandmother Duffy was the daughter of John Lewis & Julia Ann (?) who were married in 1847 in Virginia. The Lewis’ moved from Virginia to Kentucky about 1851. John and Julia Lewis had nine children: Louisa, Ann, Delphia (Duffy), Mike, Emily (Emma), Lewis, William, David and Jeremiah (Jerry).
Our great-grandparents Billy and Duffy had five children: 1. Warner (who married Lena Brooks in 1917) 2. Kerilda (who was called Kattie as a child and who married John Spradlin in 1903) 3. My second cousin Darwin’s grandmother Minnie (who married Charles Roe in 1930) 4. Golden Trigg (who married Bybee Adams in 1919) 5. And my grandfather Burl (who married Mattie Jane Britt in 1916)
We also know that our great-great-grandfather was Isaac Mansfield who was born in 1827 in Virginia. He married 17-year-old Amanda Huggins when he was 18 in 1845. Our great-great-grandmother Amanda was also born in Virginia in 1828. The Federal Census of 1850 puts them in Barren County, Kentucky with one child, James H., who was two years old at the time the census was taken. Also living with Zack and Amanda in the 1850’s was 11-year-old Nancy I. Huggins (whom we think was Amanda’s little sister).
We also know that Isaac was the son of another Isaac Mansfield. The senior Isaac Mansfield was born in 1783, in Virginia. He married Nancy Copeland on July 7, 1801, in Albemarle County, VA.
