About Our Family Research

My american roots begin with Wladyslaw V. Manduka, born Poland 1820. My GGGreat-Grandfather was a veteran of the Crimean war and was stationed at Shorncliffe, Kent in 1855-56. I think he was a German Legionaire, he was a sargeant in the 2nd British Foreign Cavalry Regiment. The name Manduka is not Polish nor German but has Italian/Maltese roots as "MANDUCA". Wlad married Mary Whitehead in Cheriton Parish on March 31, 1856 (Note:He may have arrived thru Halifax, NS as the soldiers could not return home-they had 2 choices-Canada or the Cape Colony-South africa..). He then appears in the US civil war in the 25th New York Cavalry regiment. He had 5 sons, and died in 1897. He is buried at the Loudon Park National Cemetary at Baltimore, MD. The writer is descended thru Wlads son Arthur. Arthur married Gertrude Stark, my great grandmother. Her son Arthur Edgar Manduka, Jr. married Jenny Cairn, my great-grandmother-Her son Joseph Edgar Manduka,Sr. married Sara Johnson in Philadelphia circa 1921. He had 2 children, my Aunt Dorothy and my father Joseph E. Manduke, Jr. Joe Sr changed his name after returning from WW1.(Manduka to Manduke). Since Manduka is not a polish name, I now think the line is Maltese and may have roots in the Russian/Polish Priories of the Knights of Malta/Order of St. John. I am always seeking help!!!!
