The Mangus Family of Michigan

Updated January 4, 2002

About Our Family Research

The Michigan Mangus family name is an Americanized version of the very old German name Menges. The name is pronounced Meng'-es with the e's being sounded more like a's. The family retained the Menges spelling as long as they were in Pennsylvania. When they migrated to western New York, the name was pronounced phonecticaly and was spelled Mangas. Apparently some one in the family did not like the Man-Gas connection and changed the spelling to Mangus.

Johan Conrad Menges arrived in Philadelphia in 1749 on the ship Albany from Rotterdam. Johan Conrad and his brother George were from Hebstahl, Erbach, Hessen, Germany and came from a family of master millers.
