ALLEN THACKER SR., b. 11-13-1787 Tue., along the James River near Palmyra, Fluvanna Co., Virginia., s/o Benjamin
and Anna (Grubbs) Thacker, Jr. Allen migrated to Kentucky with his father's family sometime prior to 1810.
Allen m. Harriet Vaughn on 10-10-1809 Tue. in Garrard Co., Kentucky. He was listed in the 1810 U. S. Census as
living in Garrard Co., Kentucky.; married; with 1 male under 10 years; 1 between 16 and 26 and 2 females between 16
and 26. The second female between 16 and 26 was Allen's sister-in-law, Celia Vaughn. Allen became her legal
guardian and he had to give his consent to her marriage in 1824 to Jonathan A. Laws in Barren Co., Kentucky. Allen
and Harriet were the parents of ten children: Martin Van Buren; Nancy; William H.; America; Mary; Allen, Jr.;
Hezekiel; Fielding Thomas; John Samuel and Elijah. All were born in Kentucky except John Samuel and Elijah, who
were born in Illinois.
Allen and Harriet settled around Bowling Green,Barren Co., Kentucky. That territory was described as follows:
"Down in the Blue Grass state is the pretty little city of Bowling Green. Situated in Barren Co., head of navi-
gation for steam boats and near the Mammoth Cave and other natural wonders, it is a place well worth more
than a passing glance from tourists."
Allen enlisted in the Kentucky Militia at Glasgow, Kentucky. and went to avenge the massacre of his countrymen,
who died in the cruel slaughter on the River Raisin. "Remember Raisin" was the battle cry shouted by General
Harrison's troops as they contended with the dusky foe at the Battle of Tippecanoe. Allen was there and saw
his commander, Richard M. Johnson, fire the fatal shot that took the life of the Indian chief, Tecumseh.
During the War of 1812, Allen served as a private in Captain Samuel F. Malone's Co. detached Militia, 14th
Reg. Kentucky. Vol., commanded by Lt. Colonel William Mitchusson. His appointment was on 11-20-1814 in Barren
Co., Kentucky. He was at the Battle of New Orleans in 1815 under General Jackson and on dangerous breast works
stood Allen and his brother, Elijah. With every shot of Elijah's trusty musket he brought low an enemy. And his
work was continuous for just below him was Allen, who was a less sure marksmen, but was loading the muskets as
fast as Elijah could fire them. They were behind the cotton bales in the siege of New Orleans. Allen was
discharged at New Orleans on 05-20-1815. There is a War of 1812 plaque hanging by the north door of the Bond Co.
Courthouse in Greenville, Illinois. Allen Thacker's name is on it.
After his military service was over Allen returned to Barren Co. but evidently was not contented for soon
he began preparations to seek a new home still farther on the frontier. Like others of his kind, he was
resourceful and he succeeded in making a covered wagon out of logs and he hitched his cow and a bullock to-
gether as a team. With this primitive means of transportation, Allen, his wife and children started north
along with the Vaughns, Jetts, Savages and Laws for new country. Before leaving it was agreed that they would
select homes located conveniently near each other. This they did, each finding a spring near what is now known
as the Laws Cem. in LaGrange Twsp., Bond Co., Ill. Allen's stream of water was located at Shoal Creek,
north of Greenville. Such minor hardships as having no cabin or close neighbors did not disturb such sturdy
pioneers as these and very soon timbers had been cleared and a log hut was built. There Allen and Harriet passed
the remainder of their lives.
In the year of 1828, Allen was listed as a land owner in Donnellson, Sec. 20, farmer and blacksmith,
from Barren Co., Kentucky. Per the Early Settlers of Montgomery Co., Ill. .1817/1840 - Vol. IV - Thacker, Allen, b.
Fluvanna Co., Virginia., came to county in 1828 and settled East Fork Township, 7-3, Sec. 20 (1918 History). How-
ever, the Thacker name was not found in Montgomery Co. or census records. Thacker is a Bond Co. name. Bond
Co. histories state that Abner, Martin, H. W., Allen and Elijah Thacker settled in Bond Co. Allen and his broth-
er Abner were pioneers of LaGrange precinct, Bond Co. They lived close to the county line. Allen Thacker was
a early active member at the Bear Creek Presbyterian Church near Donnellson, Ill. All Thackers have been
noted for their zeal in advancing the work of the Presbyterian Church.
According to the records from the 1850 Census of Bond Co. it lists: Allen, age 61 b. Virginia.; Harriet, age 53
b. S.C.; Fielding Thomas, age 22 b. Kentucky.; John Samuel, age 19 b. Ill.; Elijah, age 16 b. Ill.
Allen applied for a pension 04-08-1871 Sat., from Bond Co., at the age of 84 and his claim was allowed.
Harriet was b. 10-10-1793 Thu. in S.C., d/o Malachi and Nancy ( ______) Vaughn
Harriet died on 12-06-1877 Thursday, at the age of 82 in LaGrange Twsp., Ill. Allen died 6 days later on
12-12-1877 Wednesday at 90 years of age. Both are buried at the Laws Cem., Bond Co., Ill. which is located on
property across the road from where their home stood. Allen's obituary in the Greenville Advocate read: "Allen
Thacker died Dec. 12, 1877, at his son Elijah's in the northeastern part of the county. He was born in 1787
and came to Illinois from Kentucky in 1828. He was a pensioner of the government and he is recorded in Squire
Howard's books as follows. " Allen Thacker, private, drafted in Capt. Malone's Co.9 14th Reg. Kentucky. Vol., in
Barren Co., Kentucky. on or about the first day of July 1814 and was discharged at New Orleans on or about the 11th
day of Jan. 1815. Married Harriet Vaughn, Garrard Co., Kentucky. 10-10-1810. Was at the battle of New Orleans under
Gen. Jackson and was behind the cotton bales in the siege of New Orleans." (Squire Howard's dates do not
match other records.) His wife Harriet died at the same place only 6 days before and was six years his junior."
Per the 12-22-1877 legal advertisements of Bond Co., Ill., Elijah and Martin Thacker were the administrators
of the Allen's estate.
