He was 23 years old when he came to America and arrived in Chicago on August 24, 1869 with only fifty cents paper money in his pocket. He worked for two weeks of $10.00 and that took him to Clayton County, Iowa on September 17, 1869. Mr. and Mrs. Plagmann had ten children - Fred, Mary Kissinger, Dora Rudisill, Will, Lizzie Mueller, Freda Tisher, Gustave, John, George and Ann. All are deceased today except George of Portland, Oregon and John of Alexandria.

While L.V. was farming he sold corn for 18 cents a bushel and hogs at 2 1/2 cents. He made wooden slippers and sold them for 25 cents a pair. In 1881 he was hailed out and had no work and no bread in the house for a week. Frank Durkee gave him a job in the Ascas lumber yard where he was manager for $1.25 a day. Mr. Plagmann piled the first car of lumber that came to Alexandria by train.

*****NOTES ON LUDWIG PLAGMANN'S LIFE per Carole Harrington

Compiled by Carole Wesche Harrington, daughter of Herman and Esther Rudisill Wesche, granddaughter of Percy and Dorothea M.C. Plagmann Rudisill, great granddaughter of Ludwig and Dorothea Elfert Plagmann.

Dated the 19th day of September, 2002, Greeley, Colorado

Ludwig V. Plagmann was born jon May 2, 1846 in Meckendorf, a village, southwest of the city of Ludwislust, which is directly south of the city of Schwerin. Schwerin is probably the seat of government for the state of Mecklenburg. Mecklenburg is also referred to as Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and is a lerge state in northern part of the former East Germany. Births and death at that time often were listed with the names of the town of birth, the state in Germany and the seat of government for that state. Ludwig's is listed thus; Ludwig V. Plagmann, Menkendorf, Mecklenburg, Schwerin. This type of listing often causes confustion in deciding exactly in which place the person was actually born or had died.

A genealogisyt in Iowa mentioned that the probability exists that the Plagmann family was a member of the Eldena church with is the name of a town east of Meckendorf. Eldena is on a major thoroughfare (Route 19) that runs south west of Ludwigslust.

Ludwig Plagmann arrived in the United State on August 24, 1869. Because he needed money, he worked for two weeks in Chicago. He then moved on to Iowa and arrived in Clayton Center of Sept. 17, 1869.

On November 18 1870, he married Dora Scheper or Schaeper. She was from NewJabel or Jamel in Mecklenburg Schwerin and was born on Jan. 10, 1845. The marriage license was issued in Clayton County, Iowa; Ludwig's age was listed as 24 years of age and Dora's as 22 (she was actually 25 years old). Charles Wedemeyer voched for them and they were married by Pastor F.W. Seifert.

On December 25, 1871 their first son was born. Frederich (Fred) Wilhelm Heinrich was baptized on Jan. 7, 1872 at the Clayton Center Church. His sponsors were Heinrich Drahn, Friedrich Volcker and Wilhelm Ryberg. The family lived in Farmersburg township at the time.

On April 23 1874, their second son was born. Both he and his mother died the same day and are buried in the cemetery at Postville, Iowa. No name had been found for that child. There are a number of small tombstones located on the lot in Postville. No record could be found as to the identificatioon of the others buried here. It is possible that they are other relative or the two children of Ludwig's from his 2nd marriage. Ludwig purchased the entire lot and he left "no payment." In other words, he paid for it at the time. There are 6 spaces and it is listed as "lot filled". Dora's stone sits toward the north side of the plot with 2 little stones to the left of it and 4 little stones to the right. It is impossible to read anything on the smaller stones and her stone is partially covered with lichen and is very difficult to read. It says, "Dora, wife of Ludwig Plagmann, Jan 10, 1845 April 23, 1874. The lot is No. 30 and it is in the 4th row from the fence in the older section (Center Field). Ludwig in his diary said, " to boys were born to us. The infant boy died with his mother; the oldest boy grode up and lives in Missury."

O n June 26, 1874 Ludwig married Dorothea Anna Bertha Maria Elfert. They were listed as " from Luana" (a mall town near Monona). Pastor F.W. Seifert married them in Postville, Iowa. Dorothea A.B.M. Elfert had one child prior to her marriage to Ludwig. A daughter, Maria Lena (Karolina?) Elfert had been born in Germany on Nov. 13, 1871 and had immigrated to the States with her mother in 1873. Ludwig, of course had Fred who was also 3 years old.

Ludwig bought land in Iowa. Records show that his land was in Clayton, Co., Monona township. Ludwig Plagmann and Johann Raeth first bought the land together on Nov. 27, 1875 for $2700. Then Johann sold his interest to Ludwig on Feb. 2, 1876 for $1350 and on Sept. 9th, 1878, Ludwig and Dorthea (Elfert) Plagmann sold it to G.S. Young from New York for $3000..

Ludwig and Dorothea (Elfert) Plagman's children were:

1. Louis Christian Carl Jurgen born April 10, 1875 in Iowa, baptized June 13, 1875, sponsors were Christian Ellfert, Carl Schult and Jurgen Harnak, died July 14, 1975

9. George Johann Karl ("George") born June 13, 1887 in South Dakota; died Nov. 24, 1985; buried on Nove 27, 1985. Married Eva B. Sloan in 1915 and Karleen Huddleston in 1972.

10. Anna Maria Sophia born Jan 19, 1889 in South Dakota; Died Feb. 19, 1895.

Ludwig wrote in his diary, "10 children--5 boys and 5 girls bin born." Bin (in German) means "am" in the first person in English. We can assume that he meant "were" born.

The 2nd Mrs. Ludwig Plagmann ( Dorothea A.B. M. Elfert) died on April 6, 1912 of breast concer. She was 62 years, 8 months and 20 days of age. Dr. A.J. Gifford signed the death certificate. Ludwig married Frederida Dunken on June 23, 1912. It is thought that they were divorced. No record has been located to verify this, however. He then married Wilhelmine Juhnke from Yankton, South Dakota on Feb. 18, 1915 and their divorce was recorded on March 25, 1926.

Ludwig Plagmann died on April 15, 1934 of "old age". He was 87 years, 11 months and 17 days of age. Dr. A.J. Gifford signed the death certificate and T.Wyland of Bridgewater, South Dakota was the undertaker.
