Includes NotesNotes for William (Isaac) Cole (Coal):
During the early years in Henry County William Coal changed his name to Coale, as it seemed to him to look better--changed the appearance to his way of thinking.

The couple had migrated west to Missouri and settled in Henry County, near Clinton. The family settlement became a little Village, or country town, and was given the name of COAL in honor of the family. The Wonderful World Encyclopedia has this little town of "COAL" in Henry County listed in it's World Atlas Map, giving a population of 45. The year the census was taken is not known. A few other Encyclopedia's also list this little town.

During the Civil War four boys of this family met death. Thomas S. OCT. 1862, age 37; Peter W. June 3, 1863, age 34, killed at Vicksburg, Miss. Stephen D. March 1965, age 30, Calhound Settlement, South Carolina; Gustavus A. August 1863, age 26, wounded at Helena, Arkansas. Another son, Hugh, a private in 5th Infantry, with several Confederate soldiers, was captured by the Union Army and placed a prison camp at Jefferson City, Missouri. In time, the prisoners were able to dig a small opening and were able to crawl to freedom. Uncle Hugh, the last to leave, was such a large man he was unable to get through the small opening. He remained, and was freed with all the other war prisoners when the war was ended.

Before the war the Coale family owned several slaves. After the slaves were set free, some preferred to stay with their masters. One female Negro slave called "Nigger Clare" remained with the Coale family. She was an excellent worker and lived with them until her death at an old age. She is buried at Good Hope Cemetery where other family members are buried. Her brother Moses was also a family slave.

Children of William (Isaac) Cole (Coal) and Mary Anderson are:
  1. +William (Coal) Coale, b. December 18, 1800, Sullivan County, East Tennessee, d. 1885.
  2. Sister One Coal, d. date unknown.
  3. Sister Two Coal, d. date unknown.
