My particular branch of the Mathis family began in the Ozark Moutain settlement of Denver, Carroll County, AR during the mid- to- late 19th century at a time when westerly migrations from the South Eastern U.S. were common. My grandfather, John McConnell Mathis married an Arkansas girl, Tryphene Eugene Gregory. The first half of his family was born in AR, and the rest, including my father, Fred were born in TX. Fred moved to AZ following his discharge from the Army in about 1920. He married an AZ native, Perla May Vanderhoof, and raised his family there. Most of the rest of John McConnell's family settled in West TX, and AZ, and one daughter even raised a family in CA.
At the present time I am working on John M.'s background. I have found essentially no information to date, with the possible exception that his parents might have migrated from TN to AR sometime before 1880.
