I have been researching my tree since 1992 off and on, but retired recently and have gotten back into it.
I have researched many of my father's side: Liebel, King, Cole, Overstreet, James. The King, Overstreet and James families are said to have Cherokee Indian connections. I have not been able to validate any of this as yet except through family lore.
My Great Great Grandfather, Charles Julius Liebel, came to America in 1853 from Breman Germany on the ship, Mississipi, but he was born in Oelsnitz, Saxony, Germany in 1827 to Friedrich Gottlob Liebel and his wife Christiane Rosbachin. (I have finally tied him to his parents and siblings in Oelsnitz, Germany). He docked at Baltimore and traveled up through Pennsylvania to Ohio. That is all I know about him until he settled in Ohio and married my GG Grandmother in 1864, Margaret "Maggie" Hiser/Heiser, who was born in Pennsylvania in 1834, (both her parents were said to have been born in Germany. I have not been able to locate her or her parents in Pennsylvania censuses) and they had 5 children while living in Ohio from 1865 thru 1877. Maryetta b. 1865, Emma b. 1867 d. before 1880 census, Albert August 1869, Irene Minnie 1872, Frank Julius b 1877. This family moved from Ohio to Cedar Hill Texas about 1885. (Their oldest daughter, Maryetta married in Ohio in 1885. It is unlikely that they would have left prior to her marriage. She and her husband, Fredrich Windmoeller, ended up in Texas (1897 Fred was killed in Dallas, TX) but I do not know if they came with the rest of the family or later. My GGGrandfather died in Cedar Hill, TX in 1889. His wife, Maggie lived until 1912 and is buried beside him in Pleasant Mound Cemetery in Cedar Hill, TX.
I have also researched a lot of my mother's side of the family, Read/Reed/Reid, Speegle, McFarlin.
