The John Francis Mays' of Prescott Valley, Arizona

About Our Family Research


My father was Charles Edward Mays who went by Edward Charles Mays and was born in Red Fork Oklahoma 13 Dec 1907. His mother was Bertha Elizabeth Frellick who was 1/4 Cherokee Indian (Dawes Roll number 7250) and attended the Cherokee Female Seminary, graduating on
May 31, 1906. She married Colonel Ellsworth Mays(non-Indian) DOB 3 Apr 1862 and date of death 19 Apr 1934 in Tulsa Ok. He swas an oil driller and had traveled to India to work om 1888.

Edward Mays attended Chilocco Indian School and went to the Bacone Institute where he was a member of the Red Men the male choir and was a baritone soloist for them. He then graduated from Ottawa University and worked for the BIA for 35 years.

Edward married Leah Theresa Mays DOB 25 Oct 1908 in Logan, Kansas and died 20 Jan 1966 on Phoenix, Az. She worked for the BIA for 25 years before she retired on disability. Her Father was Frank D. Becker and her mother was Racheal (Pet) Porter. They lived in Logan, Kansas until both of their deaths.

I have a brother Roger Weeks Mays DOB 3 Oct 1937 who is still living in Okmulgee, Ok and a sister Bertha Elizabeth (Villigas) who goes by Beth, DOB 31 Jan 1943 and lives in Phoenix, Az.

My wife is Joanne Mary Tomkins DOB 27 Oct 1949 who is still living. She was born in Tucson, Az to Paul Nissley Tomking and Mildred Lowe. We have six living children. Edward, Jennifer, Jeffrey, Johanna, Raheem and Lateef. One child Brian Matthew died at 8 years of age.

I am interested in finding more about the decendents of George Washington Mays DOB 3 Apr 1862 in Knox, Clarion, Pa and the decendents of Betrha Elizabeth Frellick. Her Father was Charles Henry Frellick born in Nova Scotia on 3 Mar 1855 or 1860. Her Mother was Mary Edmonds Cherokee Roll #307, Wallace Roll #239, Dawes Roll #7248 and Office Roll # 232. She was born 25 Dec 1863 and died 24 Dec 1934. Her father was Henry Edmonds (Office Roll # 224, Wall Roll # 237, Cherokee Roll # 305, 1899 Roll # 27862) Mary Edmonds was on the Trail of Tears as a small girl.
