About Our Family Research

The Mayer side of the family originates with Adolph H. Mayer originally of Austria. He moved with his wife Sophie Rosenberg to the Cleveland, Port Jarvis, and eventually the Bronx in the late 1870s or 1880s. The Ledoux side (Leonard A Mayer m. Colette Ledoux) comes from Joseph Ledoux and Philomene Lepage of Québec who moved to Fall River, Massachusetts in the late 19th century. The Fainsinger family originates with Rabbi Leyser Feinsinger and his son Jehoschua "Schie" Feinsinger (1839-1872) of Plunge, Lithuania. The Elkin/Michalowitz family (Maurice H Fainsinger m. Naomi Elkin in South Africa) comes from Bernard Michalowitz of Ponevez, Lithuania, moving to South Africa and changing his last name to Elkin in the late 19th century or early 20th century.
