Since my father Charles H. May was in the Marine Corps we grew up not knowing many of our relatives. The few I do know live in the east or mid-west areas and my sister, Mary Lee Malone, does a lot of research on our lines. Dad's parents passed away before he was sixteen, so he knew a little, but we have gone back four generations now and are still looking. On the Civil War site I recently found out that we have three more Civil War vets in our family in addition to the one we knew about. This really helped in our search for my fathers family arriving in this country.
Mother's family, the Deaton-Clarke line, goes back to the Revolutionary War, but the name Clarke is too common to do quickly. We have gone back past the Civil War two generations, but are stuck there for the time being.
