The Family
of
William and Mary Conley Agan

This genealogy of the Agan family begins with William and his
wife, Mary Conley. Although it is presumed that they
originated in Ireland, it is not definately known when or where
they were born, raised and married. Neither is it known when
or how they came to America, but their first child, James, was
born August 5th, 1806 some place in North Carolina. At least
three other children; Susannah, William, and John were born
there or before the family migrated to Indiana, perhaps about
1815. From October, 1815 to June 1823 five more children
were born, Alfred, Milton, Francis, Lewis and Mary (Polly).

What is now Orange County, Indiana, was part of the land
northwest of the Ohio River, which had been visited by George
Washington to ascertain by what means it could be most
effectively bound to the Union. By the Ordinance of 1785 the
land had been surveyed into townships, six miles square and
offered for sale. It was here that William and Mary came 30
years later.

But William did not live to complete his transaction with the
government. An abstract in the possession of A. Lloyd Stroud
shows that a deed was granted by the United States of America
for the N.W. 1/4 sec. 20 Twp. 1, S and Range 2 E to the heirs of
William Agan on January 13, 1825. His fifth child, Alfred,
required court settlement of the estate in 1837 or 38. Named as
his heirs were: James, Susannah Lockhart (wife of Alexander
Lockhart), John , William, Milton, Francis, Lewis, Mary
(Polly)Weathers (wife of Washington Weathers), and the widow
Mary Conley Agan.

Some of the children of William and Mary remaind in Indiana
all their lives, but others migrated farther West. Staying in
Indiana were James, Milton, Lewis (known as Footie),
Susannah and Mary (Polly). "Footie" lived in the old
homestead all his life. Mary, the youngest, probably never
knew her father as she was less that 18 months old when he
passed away.

John and William each married in Indiana but moved their
families to Iowa about 1849 or 50, settling in Washington
Township, Marion County. Later, about 1871, William (2)
moved to western Iowa near Silver City, where he is buried.

Alfred, known as Uncle Al, and Francis, as Uncle Frank,
married in Indiana, but left in late summer or fall of 1860
bound for Iowa to be near their brothers John and William.
When they reached central Illinois, bad weather set in and they
had to camp there for the winter. When spring came Uncle Al
decided to stay there.

Uncle Frank had wanted to go to the southwest into Arkansas
or Texas, but the Civil war broke out in 1861, so he stayed in
Illinois until 1866. Then he went to Verona, Missouri where he
lived the balance of his life.

Originally from North Carolina (and his wife), William is first recorded in Orange County in the
1820 census. From the 1860 Federal census, Alfred is recorded as being born in Indiana,
so his arrival into the state must have been before 1815.
