JOSIAH ELLIS MAYS was born November 22, 1822 in Amherst County, Va. He died in 1891 and is burried in the Columbus Air Force Base Cemetery. He married Lenah Elliott March 02, 1842 in Tuscumbia, AL. She was born November 15, 1821 in Tuscumbia, AL. and died May 30, 1874.

Census records and marriage records of Lowndes Co., MS show that Josiah married Julia Elizabeth Greer (Bean) on 15 June 1876. Julia was a previously married to Dr. John Bean. Julia had three children by John Bean:

Julia died 7 Nov 1917 and is buried in the Columbus Air Force Base Cemetery (also known as the Old Greer Cemetery).
Josiah Mays was born in Amherst County, Va. and sometime between 1830 and 1840, his family moved to Alabama. He married Lenah Elliot in Tuscumbia, AL. March 2, 1842. They then moved to Lowndes County, MS in 1848 as noted in the 1850 US Census referenced above. Their daughter, Mary Katherine Mays met and married James Thomas Clarke in nearby Artesia, MS. on December 3, 1860. According to the Compiled Service records of Confederate Soldiers from Mississippi, Josiah E. Mays enlisted in Company D, 1st Mississippi Infantry Regiment on 18 August 1864 in Columbus, MS. with Samuel M. Meek as Company Commander and Colonel William S. Patton as Regiment Commander. Also enlisting in Co. D was Joseph Thomas Mays, Josiah Mays' son who was age 16 at the time. According to reference 5, these State troops were ordered to duty by Governor Clark and General Nathan Bedford Forrest to repel invasion from the North and were to assemble at Grenada, Okolona or Macon, MS. No further record of service in the MS. State Troops was found in the MS. Archives. The Federal Census of 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 list the family. His first wife is listed as "Lenah, Leeana, and Juliana". The 1880 census listed his occupation as “Grocer”.
