The Kansas Tillinghast Connection Updated July 9, 2003
About Our Family Research
The path that lead to our Tillinghast Connection has been a very difficult and discouraging one. Nothing has been known about who our Great Great Grandparents were for more than a hundred and fourty years. We only knew our Great Grandfathers name was William M. Tillinghast and that he was from Providence Rhode Island. The M. is believed to be Monk, however I have not validated that fact. When William M. was discovered on the Pawtucket R.I. Census, the information given was confusing. The 1865 Census lists William M., age 7, born in Kansas to American Parentage. He was listed with a Jane M. Tillinghast, age 42, Canadain Born to Irish Parentage. One would think that Jane M. was not then his mother. However the 1870 Census records that William M's Father & Mother were Foreign born. Canadian Research revealed no Tillinghasts in Canada prior to 1858. Not knowing Jane's maiden name, or William M's fathers first name where does one begin? Nearly every Tillinghast that ever set foot in Kansas was researched closely. Finally a William J. Tillinghast showed up on the Kansas Voter registration Lists, 1854-56, that had not shown up on any Kansas Census prior to 1860. A through research of this William J. Connects him to Jane and William M. on the July 11, 1860 Osage County Kansas Census. Having researched so very many Kansas Tillinghast's, I would like to develop a data base called the Kansas Tillinghast Connection. If you have any interest I would like to hear from you.
