Culloden mystery - who was Alan Macdonald

Updated January 19, 2003

About Our Family Research

I've been researching my mother's family for some time. They are Macdonalds of ClanRanald and live/d in North Uist. But everything stops at a mysterious Alan Macdonald who was apparently "out" in the '45. He may originally have been from Benbecula or South Uist, or even further afield, but eventually turned up in North Uist after the rebellion and our family then became the only ClanRanalds on an island of Sleats. Our first reliable ancestor on that side of the family, is his son or perhaps illegitimate grandson called Angus who is documented. Does anyone have a similar family tradition? Does anyone have any idea who this Alan might have been? I can go back to the 12th century on one line, but I would really like to be able to take this branch back further. Please e-mail me with any info. (Or any questions about North Uist.)
