About Our Family Research
My GGGrandfather, Heikki Toivanen was born in 1857 and died in 1922. He was married to Greta (no known maiden name), who was born in 1854 and died in 1917. They had nine children, four girls and five boys, my GGrandfather John being the youngest son. My great grandparents are buried in Oulu Joki Church Cemetery, Oulu, Finland. John Abraham Toivanen was born in 1880 in Oulu, Finland. He came to the states in 1896, leaving his parents and siblings in Finland. The family name was changed to Stevens sometime thereafter. None of this did I know, until just recently. When the genealogy bug decided to bite me, it got me hard...this was just a couple of months ago. I have been on line probably 12 hours a day trying to find anything that I could on my family. In my searching, I found a very dedicated woman at the Chippewa County Historical Society in Michigan. She has been very helpful in filling in some blanks. After posting many messages thru out the internet, I met another wonderful person, she has resources I do not have. She has searched diligently trying to help me. It was this new friend that found out that there were at least nine Stevens siblings...
