Our McDonald's and Smith's of Canada

Updated June 15, 2003

About Our Family Research

Matthew McDonald born about 1813 sailed from Ulster in 1832, enroute to Canada. It is thought that he had attended Trinity College and that he may have studied to be a Catholic priest. He met and married Ester E. McKay around 1843 in the Glengarry Co., Ontario area. Esther had been married before to Alexander W. Calder and had at least one child, William George. The family moved to Prescott Co., Ontario where they lived till 1878 before moving on to North Dakota. The McDonald's and Calder's from this point have been fairly well researched with some holes still in need of being filled.
Daniel Smith, born about 1840 came from Wentworth Co., Ontario. He may have married Mary Jane Young from the same area. Daniel is listed as German in origin. They had a number of children one of whom was Ira Smith. Ira married up with the Bradt family, also from Wentworth Co.
