 Includes NotesNotes for Elizabeth Foote:
I am a FOOTE and so also trace the BELDEN /BELDING line. As I find the links, I look for the stories about the people (that is the part that I love - who were they? what were thier lives like? etc.) Anyway, this information on SARAH is from the following sources: 1. The Hatfield Town Records; 2. The Mather's Magnalia; 3. New England Captives Carried to Canada, Vol II, by Emma Lewis Coleman; 4. On-line book: Genealogies of Hadley Families. Author: L. M. Boltwood. Call #:R929.1 B694. Metcalf & Co. Northampton, 1862; 5. Foote Family History & Genealogy Vol I & II by Abram William Foote.

At age 14. SARAH escaped the 16 Sep 1696 Indian massacre. Slain were her mother ELIZABETH FOOTE (age 42), her brother DANIEL (age 19), her brother JOHN (age 3) and her sister THANKFUL (age 8 months). She escaped by hiding in a field. Her brother SAMUEL (age 9) & her sister ABIGAIL (age 7) were wounded in the attack, but survived. The story is that SAMUEL "had a hatchet stuck in his head and some of his brains came out at his wound" and it was a surprise that he lived. Her father DANIEL, her brother NATHANIEL (age 21), and her sister ESTHER (age 12) were captured by the Indians at that time and taken to Canada. Her father was sold as a servant to the Jesuits at the Seminary and his job was to wait on them - cut wood, make fires, tend the garden, etc. DANIEL and his children were "gathered & freed" 8 Jun 1697/8 and returned home.

In the Indian attack of 1704, at age 22, SARAH was captured by the Indians and taken to Canada. She was with child at the time of her capture and gave birth to CHRISTOPHER BURT in Canada.
