xxx —Arriving on the Fortune in 1621, Stephen Deane became one of the Purchasers. In January or February 1632/33 the court gave him permission to build a grist mill with monopoly rights if he could handle all the colony's needs, but on condition that he charge no more than one pottle out of every bushel of ground grain (PCR 1:8). On 24 March 1633/34 he was one of a committee chosen to rate the colonists for taxes (PCR 1:26). He married Elizabeth Ring (see John Insley Coddington, "The Widow Mary Ring, of Plymouth, Mass., and Her Children," TAG 42:193). He died in September 1634, and on 16 September 1635 Elizabeth Deane, widow, married Josias Cooke (PCR 1:35). The children of Stephen and Elizabeth (Ring) Deane were Elizabeth (married William Twining and had children), Miriam (married John Wing as second wife but no issue), and Susanna (married first Joseph Rogers and second Stephen Snow, and had [p.279] children by the second husband) (TAG 42:193). The name of Stephen Deane on a list of first born children to get land in 1662 (PCR 4:19) was probably his "right" to land and would have passed to his heirs.
