Jane Sherman vs.
the Servants of
Henry VIII

The following article was submitted by Heather Bower, our Scribe and Secretary. Thomas Sherman's wife, Jane, twice fought off the servants of King Henry VIII over a matter of "unpaid rent of 8 acres of land".

"Thomas Sherman was a lawyer with a large practice in the Court of Common Pleas; a churchwarden in Yaxley in the time of Henry VIII; Lord of several manors; and a Deputy Sheriff in 1540 and 1546.
"In Star Chamber Proceedings is a bill of complaint of Sir John Wiseman, Knight, against Thomas Sherman of Yaxley, stating that on 22 April, 22 Henry VIII (153) complainent sent two of his servants to distrain for unpaid rent of 8 acres of land in Gors Close, Co. Suffolk, part of the manor of Swattyshell owned by complainant, which rent Sherman refused to pay for three years; that said servants seized by way of distress a plow with four horses; and that as they were driving in the King's highway, Johanne Sherman and Margery Hage, with staves in their hands and certian other riotous persons "made a sawte and fray upon the said ii servants and put them in daunger of their lyvis and grevously did bete William Erysshe and take away the said dystress from them."

Afterwards, on 24 April, 23 Henry VIII (1531), complainant's servants again distrained the plow and horses;

" ... but as they came tetherward, mette with them by the way, Johanne Sherman, the wyff of Thomas Sherman, Thomas Dykon and Margery Hedge with stavys and stonys in their lappys, _ well as other servants of the said Thomas Sherman, who with force and armis did fyght with them and them did bett, wond and yll intret."
