The McKinniss Family from Scotland ( circa 1722)

Updated September 7, 2002

About Our Family Research

This is an up-dated version of the McKinniss Family History originally published by the McKinniss Family Organization in 1914. It is not yet finished as I still have over 500 names and many more facts, and eventually pictures to add.

The McKinniss Family History actually begins in the year AD 400. The original progenitor of the Family name is Angus Mor MacAngus who coming from Ireland conquered a Piece of Scotland called Dalriada. The Name literally means Big Fox son of the Fox. From this Name comes the Families Angus, McAngus, Anguson, Masters, McMasters, Masterson, McKinniss, Kinnison, Innis, Mcinnis, as well as Maginis, Mcginis, McGuiness and many other variations of the spelling.

The McKinniss Family specifically was always a small clan which made its mark in history by providing warriors and Clan Chief bodyguards to the Major Clans such as the Camerons, the McDonalds, and the McKinnons, and many others. These Clan Chiefs relied on the McKinniss Clan to provide this protection because they had the reputation of being absolutely loyal in protecting the Chief from assination by members of their own clan.
