My name is Dorothea and I have just begun our family tree,on both my dads' McKenzie side and my mom's Gargan side. View our family tree for more information.
So far I know that our McKenzie grandparents, Robert and Grace Smith McKenzie came from Cumbernauld Scotland in 1887, settled in St.George/Tenants Harbor Maine. Robert and Grace had eight children, all have passed on, My dad being the last, Sylvanus Heminway McKenzie. Our grandfather Robert and Uncle John were stone cutters and my dad a quarry worker, among other occupations. Our grandparents owned a home on the Waltston Rd in St. George Maine.
Our Gargan grandparents came from the Lankashire county outside of Manchester England. Edward and Sarah Ingham Gargan came over to America in 1910 on their honeymoon. They had seven children that we are aware of, maybe more. They put up for adoption my mother, Theresa Gargan( Dorothy Colburn), Mary Frances (Juanita Roberta Bowden Joy) and Marilyn (Marilyn Titus Lange). Edward and Sarah left to go back to England in 1926 and brought four children with them, Annie, Marion, Esther and Alfred. There is two aunts left, Annie Anderson who lives in Moreton Wirral, Merseyside England and Marilyn Lange who lives in Rockledge Florida. However, our great grandparents came from West Meath Ireland, along with some great aunts and great uncles.
Please check out a web site devoted to the preservation and art of stone cutting of granite and limestone and granite quarrying. http://www.mainequarries.mckenziewebdesign.com a lot more to follow.....
