Richard John McKinlay
I am interested in finding any information pertaining to the family of my great-grandfather, Alexander McKinlay, probably born in the late 1850ís or very early 60ís, who lived in his maturity in Girvan, Ayrshire, Scotland. He married Mary Forsyth, and had six sons, four of whom emigrated to the U.S., and one to Canada. The five emigrants all married (at least once) and most had families; the sixth, Thomas, stayed home in Girvan as a bachelor, baker and occasional poet.
Of the four sons who emigrated to the U.S., the eldest, Alex, settled in New York City, and had a number of children. The other three, John, Bryce, and William settled in Chicago in the early part of the century.
I am the descendant of John, who was my grandfather. He was born in 1885 in Girvan, emigrated to the U.S. in 1906, and later married Christina MacDonald. They had two children in Chicago: John Forsyth McKinlay (my father: born in 1915, died 1981) and Annabelle (born 1918, died 1967). Christina died in the influenza pandemic of 1918, shortly after the birth of Annabelle. The following year my grandfather returned to Girvan to raise his two orphaned children with the assistance of his parents, and stayed there until his remarriage (to Janet Baird Russell). They returned to Chicago in 1925, where she died in 1936. In 1947, he returned to Girvan, remarried (Jean), and remained until his death in 1952.
My father married Vivian Johnson in 1936, and had two children: Richard John (the present correspondent, born 1937, married to Margaret Malm in 1959) and Susan Louise (born 1945, married to Patrick Wnek). I have only one child, a daughter, Kristin Margaret McKinlay (born 1972, married to Hugh French) and one grandchild Winifred McKinlay French ( b. 2004), all of whom now reside in Eastport, Maine.
As for the other brothers of my grandfather, Bryce also settled in Chicago and had two sons: Bryce, Jr. and William both of whom married and remained in the area, but had no children. Bryce, Sr. died in 1990 (?) in his 90ís, and his son Bill died in 1997. Bryce Jr. resides in suburban LaGrange with his wife. William also came to Chicago, where he met and married Alice. Both are now deceased; they had no children.
The fifth emigrant, James, settled in Toronto, Canada and had at least two children, James Jr. and Dorothy. I believe both have a number of children and grandchildren.
