Henry McMillin & Elizabeth Beard of Columbiana Co., Ohio

Updated August 5, 2006

About Our Family Research

Henry McMillin and Elizabeth Beard were married on 31 Oct 1820 in Columbiana County, OHIO. Henry's father was a John or Joseph McMillin or McMullin. I would like to confirm who the parents of Henry were, where they were born, and who was the first MCMILLIN to the USA. Elizabeth's father was Jacob Abraham Beard, who died in 1831. Her mother's name was Barbara.

HENRY was born in Allegheny Co., PA and representative of a Scotch family according to his son-in-law's (Jesse Carpenter Parsons) biography. It also said his wife Elizabeth Beard was born in Philadelphia and was of a Pennsylvania-Dutch family. This is the only record we have found which names Henry and Elizabeth's origins.

HENRY MCMILLEN married ELIZABETH BEARD on 31 October 1820. (Columbiana Co., Ohio marriages, LDS records batch #7725514.) The only document available from Columbiana County is a handwritten index which shows the exact spelling of their names as listed above and "James Vale" as Justice of the Peace and "Horace Potter", Clerk. No parents are listed.

Henry's last name is spelled many different ways on records. According to the 1870 census, he could not read or write. There is no Henry McMillin found in 1820 census records in Columbiana County, Ohio, although other McMillin's are found.

1830 US Census, Middleton Twnshp, Columbiana Co, OHIO: Henry "McMullin" age 30-39, living with: children (2) males under 5, (1) male 5 to 9, (1) male 10-14, (2) females Age 5 to 9. Wife is age 30-39, also two elderly people (parents?) male age 90-99 and female age 80-89.

August, 1831, Will of Jacob Abraham Beard divided 60 acres in Steubenville Township into six equal parts, ten acres "whereon the Dwelling house and Barn stand unto my beloved daughter Elizabeth McMillin and Henry McMillin her husband." ...etc.

1840 US Census, Middleton Twnshp, Columbiana Co, OHIO: Henry "McMillen" age 40-49 living with male children one under 5 (Franklin), two ages 5 to 9 (John and Michael), two ages 10-14 (Andrew, James), and one age 15-19 (Henry Jr.) Three female children: one under age 5 (Barbara?) and two 15-19 (Lucy, Eva), one Female age 40-49 (Elizabeth).

1850 US Census, Huntington Twnshp, Gallia Co, OHIO:
Henry "McMillon" age 51, farmer born in PA. Wife Elizabeth age 46, born PA, Children: Henry age 25, James age 22, Jackson age 20, Michael age 18, John age 16, Barbary age 15, Franklin age 12. All born in Ohio.

1860 US Census, Clayton Twp, Crawford Co, WISC: Henry McMillin, Age 58, farmer born in PA, living alone next to daughter Eva and John Copus, and their seven children.

1870 Census, Clayton Twp, Crawford Co, WISC: Henry McMillen, Age 70, farmer born PA, living with Ruth (Adney), Age 62 born in OH.

Henry "McMullen" married Ruth Adney on 14 Dec. 1874 in Clayton, Crawford Co, Wisc. On the marriage certificate, Henry lists his father's name as JOSEPH MCMULLEN. However, the Marriage Regis-tration record dated July 11, 1875 lists his father as JOHN MCMILLIN.

QUIT CLAIM DEED, CRAWFORD CO., WISC: Henry McMillin to Verona Fish, 19th day of January 1881. South East quarter of the South West quarter of Section No., one (1), Town (10) Ten, Range (3) Three. Received for record on February 24th 1886.

It appears that Henry died sometime in February, 1886 and Verona Fish then registered this quit claim deed. This may have been when Ruth moved to Iowa, and spent the last ten years of her life with her daughter, Esther St.John. She died on Dec 23, 1894.
