The Chessa family started in Sardinia, Italy in the city of Codrongianus which is in the province of Sassari. On January 25,1876 Margaret Barra and Elias Chessa had a son named Paulo Maria Chessa. When Paulo was 12 years old, his bride to be was born. Her name was Gavina Lucia Camboni. She was the daughter of Matilda Noce and Sebastian Camboni. She was born February 28,1888 in the city of Codrongianus.
On May 19,1912 Paulo and Gavina were married. Not long after they were married, they had their first daughter, Margaret, who was named after Paulo's mother,was born April 17,1913. Not long after that, Paulo expressed his desire to move to America. While they were preparing for the trip, Gavina found that she was expecting again and she would have to stay behind.
On April 18,1914 Paulo set sail for America. He settled in Woodvale, a small Italian neighborhood in Johnston Pa. He started a small grocery store. A few months later, he recieved word that Gavina had given birth to another daughter. Her name was Sebastiana and she was born on September 19,1914. She was named after Gavina's father. After 2 years of seperation, Gavina was finally able to make the trip to America. They came through Ellis Island on June 11,1916. Around 1917, their only son was born, but died shortly after birth.
On June 16,1918 their fourth child was born. A daughter named Angelina. She was more than a year old when Gavina died. Paulo and Gavina had only been married for 7 years. Gavina died November 9,1919 at the age 31. Paulo was left to raise three daughters alone.
A good friend of Paulo's, Massimo Casti who was also from Sardinia, helped Paulo take care of the girls. When Margaret was 17, she married Massimo on May 12,1930. Two years later, in 1932, Paulo, Sebastiana, and Angelina moved to Columbus Ohio. There he opened another store called "Chessa's Grocery". A few years later, Sebastiana met an Irishman named Joseph Brennan. They were married on February 26,1938. On July 21,1945 Angelina married a man named Alfred Judy. That same year, Paulo decided to retire. He resided with Angelina and her family until his death on August 29,1957 at the age 81.
Margaret and Massimo moved Ehrenfeld, Pa. They raised 6 children together until Margaret's death in 1961 at the age of 48. After their youngest son was married, Massimo moved in with his daughter, Louise, until his death in 1980 at the age of 87.
Sebastiana and Joseph raised 8 children in Columbus, Ohio. Joseph died in 1974 at the age of 73. Sebastiana moved to Maine with her youngest daughter, Kathy, until her death in 1999 at the age of 86.
Angelina and Alfred raised 6 children in Columbus, Ohio. Angelina died in June at the age of 75. Alfred still lives in Columbus, Ohio.
