Currently our research is focusing around the family of John McQuade born 1823-1824 in NY, parents born outside of America who married Lydia Butland/Butlin born about 1824-1825 in PA, both parents born outside of America as well. They were most likely married 1850 or before. They are both listed in the 1870 Philadelphia, PA Census - John being 46, Lydia 45. They are listed with children at the time Elizabeth 21, Rachel 16, William 19, Mary 13, Samuel 10, John 6, and Ellwood 4(seen later as Elwood.) Other information included in the census: John - Value of Personal Estate - 200, Occupation - Blacksmith, was the only citizen of 21 years of age or older able to vote in the household. Rachel was listed with having no occupation and not being able to read or write; however, Mary, Samuel, and John were going to school. Ellwood was still at home. William was listed as an Apprentice Stairbuilder. All children were born in PA. Samuel Butlin McQuade was my great-grandfather.
