- WWJ, a Jesuit and the Bomb (24 KB)
This is the story of my great-uncle, Father Michael DeLisle Lyons of Detroit, Michigan and how he was licensed and built the first commercial radio station in the world, "8MK" (now called WWJ. He became a Jesuit missionary in India for nearly 20 years, assisted in India's struggle for independence, where was often in contact with Mohandas K. Gandhi (a.k.a. Mahatma Gandhi) and India's first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. Father Mike fell in love with a nun (Sister Agnes Shah) and became the natural father of two daughters (Esther and Violet), resigned from the Jesuits, became a key supplier of Beryllium (used in making triggers for nuclear weapons)from 1945 to 1974, died in Arvada, Colorado of chronic beryllium lung disease. Be fore his death in Arvada, he also assisted in drafting the first nuclear proliferation agreements, was the President of the Chamber of Commerce, owned the Beryl Ores Company, and returned to the priesthood.
