James G. Merrill (son of Zadoc Ensign Merrill and Lydia A. Clark) was born March 09, 1830 in New Hampshire, and died June 29, 1915 in Jefferson SD. He married Sarah Willis Martin on July 03, 1853 in Lynn, Mass./ Grafton County, New Hampshire.

Enlisted in February 22, 1864,at Springvale, under Capt. Austin Cannon, for period of 3 years at age 32 yrs, occupation was a shoemaker. Mustered in at Madison Wis. March 14, 1864 Appointed Sgt. April 30, 1864; First Sgt. July 1st 1864 Commissioned as 2nd Lt August 31 1864,Co. H 36th Wisconsin Volunteers Infantry. Was in number of large battles, and prisoner of war at Reams Station Va., August 25, 1864, Paroled October 9, 1864 .Sent from Camp Parole Md. to Army of the Potomac Dec. 16, 1864. Missing inaction December 1864. His name also appeared as James E. Merrill. Mustered out July 12, 1865

Death of Early Settler
James G. Merrill, 85 years old, a resident of this county for 48 years, died Monday night at his home in McCook of senility after a several months illness.
Mr. Merrill homesteaded a farm a mile from Jefferson and made his home there a number of years. Forty six years ago he operated an Overland freight train between Sioux City and Fort Sully. Nine years ago he owned the only cheese factory in Union county and for the past few years he retired and made his home in McCook.
Deceased was a veteran of the Civil War, having been Second Lieutenant under Capt. Austin Cannon. He took part in a number of large battles and spent several months in Libby Prison. Capt Cannon recently visited in the Merrill home.
He is survived by his wife at McCook, a daughter Mrs. George Teller of Jackson, Neb. A brother Clark Merrill of McCook, and a sister Mrs. Ensign of Pardeeville. Wis., all of whom are expected to be present at the funeral service which will be made in the McCook Cemetery.
Mr. Merrill was one of the oldest settlers of Union County and was very active in the early development of the country. For many years he served as county commissioner of the county from the first Commissioner district. His many friends and comrades in Elk Point were sorry to hear of his demise and extend sympathy to the surviving wife and family.
