My family history exploration and research incentives began in the 1940’s, when I was 5 years old, as further described in the Introduction. The name Merkle is actually as modification of the name Merkel which my father changed for business and daily use. My parents and grandparents have related that the family ancestors were european, from Germany and Poland. Where did the name Merkel originate? Although it’s very strongly of german decent, my computer research offered another direction. There are more name reflections of which I located to be of interest. The computer based Internet referred me to “Merkel Family of North America”. So far as can be determined, this is the original spelling of the Surname. The earliest colonist bearing that name was a woman, probably a wife of an English Immigrant to new England in 1698. Next was my ancestorJohann Friedrich Merkel from Hassloch, Germany who was selected for Governor Hunter's Naval Stores Project and was brought, with 1500 other Palatines to the Colony of New York in 1710. In the nearly three hundred years since then, descendants have lived in nearly every state of the United States and nearly every Province of Canada.
