Meyer - Schmaltz Family of Alberta, Canada Updated November 18, 2003
About Our Family Research
We have undertaken to trace our German ancestors back to their European home, and although there has been some interesting information assembled, we have experienced some difficulties. The search is recent and ongoing. Our Jacob Meyer ancestor, born in 1818,arrived in Canada prior to his marriage to Margaretha Kuntz in 1842 as recorded at Berlin (Kitchener) Ontario. They resided at St Clements Ontario, which is recorded on the 1861 Wellesley Township map. We have not been able to locate any immigration or registration to show the date of arrival or exact originating location. Jacob apparently arrived in Quebec with his brother George, from Alsace - Lorraine, France. Margaretha, born in 1827, apparently immigrated from Baden, Germany. There is now a very large family from the seven Canadian generations. The Schmaltz family has been traced back to Joseph Schmalz in Kapsweyer, Psalz, Germany in 1777(also recorded 1781), through the 1808 migration to Russia and then to America in 1889. Many of the Russian period details are sketchy.
