My research began in February, 2005. I have recently subscribed to Ancestry.com and purchased Family Tree Maker software. Previously, I had used the free Personal Ancestral File (PAF) software offered by FamilySearch.org. I have started interviewing family members to obtain information they may remember.
In April, 2005, I submitted several Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests for the Naturalization Records of my father and his parents. The Department of Homeland Security did fulfill my requests, without cost, although the requested records arrived over a year later.
I have also requested the original Social Security application from the Social Security Administration (SSA) for two of my grandparents. The SSA charges $27 per record for this service. With the help of online genealogy data, my family tree currently contains about 411 people, although I have much verification work ahead of me.
