About Our Family Research

As far as I can tell my Mother's side of the family, (Hackworth), descended from Russell Gregory 1795-1864, who was murdered by North Carolina rebels during the civil war. (I have a picture of his grave stone in the primitive Baptist Church of Cades Cove, Tenn. He was the founder of Gregory's Bald. Russell Greggory married Celia Carver from North Caroloina, they had a son named Charles I believe who married Sarah or Martha Whitehead who had 8-12 children, one of whom was my great grandmother "lizzie", (Elizabeth) Gregory. Martha Whitehead divorced Gregory and married a man named John Hendrix who settled in Andersen County in "Black Oak Ridge". John Hendrix was known to other people in the surrounding area as "The Prophet". He prophecised about the building of the area now known as Oak Ridge, Tennessee, abt. 30 years before it came into existence. He died in 1915 from tuberculosis. When the "secret project", as it was called then, started in 1930's-40's, the settlers of that community, were paid by the government for their land and told to vacate the area. By then, my greaqt grandmother, Lizzie Law, married to Will Law, had many children, one of whom was my grandmother, Edith Law who married Charles Everett Hackworth, son of Jesse Hackworth. Edith and Everett, as he was known by, had one daughter, and that is my mother, Geraldine Elsie Hackworth from Maryville, Tennessee. She married my father, Edward Covert Briggs, also from Maryville, Tenneessee. Lots of siblings and spouses histories known and will fill in later from maternal side.

Edwards father's name was Dr. David H. Briggs born 1893 who married Ester Covert Pollock born 1893 from Kentucky, he was head of pschology department at Maryville College and affiliated with furman University and Piedmont institute as well untill his retirement in 1960???, lived in Maryville on Crawford street until his death in 1987, house is on College property and still stands today. Had 3 sons, the first named David H. Briggs, Jr. who died at pearl harbor, the second named, John Briggs who had a first wife named Susie ?, and a second named Jeanne Shay Briggs. I am not sure if John's children were from 1st or 2nd marriage but their names are David and Donna Briggs?? Don't have much info on the Briggs side of my family and would love to know more, I think.
