About Our Family Research

I began researching my heritage of Eastern Kentucky in March, 2003. I had always been told that our European heritage was German. I have found that it all started approximately 1732 when Hans Michael Reisner arrived in Pennslvania from Rotterdam Holland on the ship the Dragon. His father was German, his mother Dutch. Hans Michael Moved to Frederick Co., Maryland, later lived in western Virginia, and in Hawkins Co. Tennessee, and last he appears to have died in Knox County, Ky in 1805. He had married a Catherine ? , and had 4 children; Sarah, Mary Ann,Michael, And Barbara Risner. We are the direct decendents from Michael Risner who married Sarah Howard. There has been a question of Cherokee Blood line in our family. We feel confident that Sarah Howard d/o James Howard s/o Thomas Howard who married a Letty "Hatchet Grey" Durham full blooded Cherokee from The Cherokee Nation, Wilkes, Georgia. A story was passed down in the 1950's from Sheridan Risner, s/o Gardner Risner , who married Polly Ann Spradlin (sister to Cordie Spradlin-Risner Leslie Homer Risner's 2nd wife) that two Cherokee Indians were taken to the home of Meredith Risner, and one of the sisters died of pneumonia, the other indians' name was Letty Durham. It was told one of the sons were in the Calvary that would lead the Indians on "The Trail Of Tears" to Oklahoma . MICHAEL and SARAH had 12 children; JAMES, William "Stringer Bill", Elias "Eli", Jacob, Archibald, John, Michael "Mike", Issac, Jane, Abraham, Catherine, and another female who died young. Our decendents are from JAMES Risner and Margaret "Peggy" Adams. They had 11 children; MERIDITH, William "Pretty Bill", Idress, Martin, Michael, Wilson, Francis Michael, George, Mary Jane, James Paul, and Lark Risner. They lived on Puncheon Creek, Licking River, Magoffin County, Kentucky at Puncheon Camp. His first born son, MERIDITH married Elizabeth "Betty" Whitaker . His first born, JOHNSON EUGENE "Jont" or J.E. RISNER , a crippled Baptist Preacher, married Susan Howard. There are a couple of stories of how he got shot in the knee of one of his legs and so walked with a limp. He was born June 15, 1857, died 1962. (we found his tombstone on top of Puncheon Camp near his homestead in The Miller Cemetary, August 2, 2003). Jont Risner and Susan had 5 children; Mandy Jane, Lee "Scott", LESLIE, Maudie, and one that died young. LESLIE HOMER RISNER, born 1883,d.1922 married Amanda Risner, d/o Gardner Risner and Elizabeth Poe, she died young from consumption, they had 3 children; Tolbert, Golda, and Hazel (they lived with Johnson and Susan until Leslie remarried). We found a listing for an Annie, but no one remembers her. Leslie remarried in 1910 to a Cordie Spradlin, d/o George W. Spradlin and Frances Hall. They had 5 children; ELMER RUSSEL, Myrtle, Sadie, Euca, and Susan. They were all born in Magoffin County, Kentucky, Puncheon Camp. Leslie traveled back and forth to Ohio to work on The Scioto Marsh in the Onion Fields, he would return home to Ky in the winter. In 1922, it has been told he had a head injury while working at a sawmill in Magoffin County, this is what took his life. He owned some property there and it has been said that Cordie was not able to take over this property because she was married into the family, her children would be heirs. There was a falling out between Cordie and her father-in-law Jont Risner. She took her 5 children and moved to Alger, Ohio. She made that her home and worked on the marsh and raised her children by herself. Her daughter Susie states, "We didn't have much, but we had a roof over our head and plenty of food." Cordie was never to return to Magoffin County, Ky,. Elmer eloped to Magoffin County, Ky with Ellen Elizabeth Gilroy. Elmer and Ellen had 10 children; HOMER RUSSEL, Marilyn, Joe Leslie, Paul Eugene, Joyce Ann, Larry Lee, Judy Louise, Michael Dean, Brenda Jo, and Victoria Lynn (who died at birth). Our story BEGINS.
