The Naftel family came to the United States from the isle of Guernsey in the early 1800's. The first to come was Saint John Naftel who orignally settled in Philadelphia. While there he studied medicine and became doctor. Shortly afterwards he married and moved to Alabama finally settling in Montgomery. He had several children, one a son named Albert Simmons Naftel. When Albert Simmons reached adulthood he attended Strata Academy located in Strata, Alabama. While attending the Academy he boarded in the home of Dr. William Neal Cone. Albert Simmons fell in love with Dr. Cone's daughter Sara Clementine and they were married on 28 November 1850. They established the village of Naftel in 1851 where they built a home and operated several businesses. Their oldest son was Saint John, he attented Vanderbilt Medical School graduating in 1880. Dr. St. John married Nina King in 1918. This marriage produced four boys - Joseph King, 1919; William Hugh, 1920; Saint John, 1922 and James Philip, 1924.
