History of the Nattrass Family (Durham, England-Canada)

Updated December 24, 2005

About Our Family Research

After 15 years of research we compiled a hard cover family history book of the Nattrass family. Our family stats trace back to 1621 with Matthew Nattrass of Stanhope.
The history of the Nattrass surname is quite interesting, as many argue over their descendency. Prior to their arrival to Canada from England, the Nattrass family lived in Austria and Holland. There is a small town outside of Innsbruk, Austria called Natters. I do not know when they immigrated to Holland but upon their arrival, the name was changed to Van Natters and Van Natteris. There is a Van Natteris coat of arms. The term "Van" meaning "from".
Upon landing in England in the early 1600's, the surname were anglocized and the "Van" portion of the name was dropped.
The book includes wills, obituaries, business cards and a very interesting section on Dental Surgery in the mid 1800's. Pictures of family members, churches, reunions and gravestones are also included.
I'd be interested in speaking to anyone who knows of the emigration of Thomas Nattrass from Weardale, England to Durham County, Ontario (then Upper Canada)in 1818. He came over with the Emersons and Gardiners as mentioned in the book. However, if anyone has further information to share, it would be great to hear from you.
