I witnessed my mother, Anne Dreifus Neubauer, as she took up family genealogy as a retirement pursuit. While she made this effort, even learning to use a computer in order to do genealogy research more easily, I had minimal interest in her work. I think I figured that I'd have time in the future to pour over the documents that she had gathered and created. But Mother died suddently in 1999, just a few short weeks after a late-stage cancer diagnosis.
Now that my daughter, Jesse, is starting to prepare for her Bat Mitzvah this year, and neither of my parents are here to witness this important life passage of their first granddaughter, I am feeling the need to find parts of my family that only my parents had stayed in contact with. If I wait until my retirement to start making these connections, it may be too late.
