  • Yarbrough Coat Of Arms, family -Nocte Volamus (10 KB)
The Yarbrough crest has (on the top of the helmet) a golden falcon, which is belled (closed wings). The falcon also has bells on its legs and is preying, or more correctly 'trussing', on a mallard 'proper'. This means its color is natural. The helm, which sits atop the crest, is shown in profile with the visor closed. This indicates that the family were warriors. The seam where the helm meets the torse is covered with a silk scarf that has 6 twists in it. The shield itself is pale argent (silver) and azure (blue), with a chevron between three chaplets counterchallenged. The mantling is sable and argent. Beneath this is the family motto--Nocte Volamus (Who dares wins) FULL PICTURE ON YARBROUGH MOTTO PAGE...

  • Yarbrough/Sims Cemetery Sedalis, Ky Graves Co. (1 KB)
George and Lucretia lived in a log cabin located in Graves Co., Ky., where Sims and Yarbrough Cemetery is today. Yarbrough-Sims Cemetery is located in Sedalis, Ky Graves County.. The story has been told that when George Yarbrough and his son, George R. Yarbrough, died, they were buried in the family garden, that is when Yarbrough Cemetery was started. Robert Louis Sims told, that his grandmother, Virginia Belinda Yarbrough, told him, that George and George R. Yarbrough both died of that "bad disease". We haven't figured out just what that disease was until lately chicken-pox.... There is some garlic that grows around the edges of Yarbrough Cemetery that is said to have started and spread from the garlic that Lucretia grew in her garden. A story has been handed down from generation to generation about Lucretia Yarbrough. It seems that she was in her kitchen one day churning butter when she noticed a deer walking along by the window. She slipped to the back door and knocked the deer in the head with her churn dasher, killing it on the spot. She was also known to ride a horse or mule to church, just depending on which was easier to catch at the moment. She also would ride a horse to Paris, Tennessee, (about twenty five miles one way) to the Methodist district meetings. The Cabin of George and Lucretia was also known as the birthplace of Burnett's Chapel United Methodist Church. Burnett's Chapel was organized on Friday evening, the 8th of June, 1855, (seven years after the death of George Yarbrough) in a prayer meeting in front of the log cabin of Lucretia Yarbrough. George and Lucretia were both born in North Carolina. George moved from there to Montgomery Co., Tennessee, later to Stewart Co., Tennessee, and from there to Graves Co., Kentucky in 1832. It is thought that George and Lucretia were married in Stewart Co., Tn. in 1815 or 1816. George died in 1848, sixteen years after moving to Kentucky. George Yarb
  • WE WERE THE DANES- CALLED THE VIKINGS (22 KB)
The English Yarborough family is one of the oldest families in England. The Yarbroughs actually can be traced back to 853 AD when the House of Yarborough was formed by Germund. The family was of Danish origin and it is assumed that they came into England (then known as Anglo-land) during the Danish invasion in 800Ad. The Danes in England were enemies of the Anglo-Saxons and they sided with the French William, called William The Conqueor of Normandy, during the invasion of 1066AD. As a result William awarded these Danes with various estates when he came into power. According to records at this time Eustachius de Yarburgh, a descendent of Germund, was made Lord of Yarburgh, which was known by both names, (Yarburgh & Yarborough) This estate of course received a charter from the King and was allowed a representative in Parliment. The Yarborough or Yarburgh family is reportedly the eleventh oldest recorded family in England and the longest in the New Land.

  • Dreamwalkers The Mystical Beings Of The Past (123 KB)
James Knox Polk Yarbrough had a mixture of Indian blood and felt at home in the forest with nature. As a child he had a friend among the red face called Grandfather. His own blood flowed with the Black- Foot, Crow and Cherokee. Jame's friend was the Medicine Man, named White Cloud. White Cloud saw visions from the Two World and could cure the sick with chants and herbs. He taught James the old ways to find balance with nature and connected to the spirits of the Dreamwalkers the mystical being of the Dream World. Dreams serve as an alternate dimension to the waking life, with knowledge to be grained from the journey- that you connect with your ancestors and truths unfolds each night . Tennessee is a land of hills and mountains .The Yarbroughs like the forest and tract along the Mississippi that was rich alluvial land, Here were many low land and Lakes and abounding wild life, fowl and swamps covered with cypress trees. Everywhere the hills and mountain sides were heavily wooded, and forests of various kinds of timber trees are found in the alluvial plains the climate mild and healthful to the body and soul. White Cloud would talk with James of life and the journey that all men had to take to manhood. He hunted with him in the dense green forest, that had plenty of wild game with hundreds of rabbits and wild fowls, and flocks of green birds that the Indians painted on mask and shells called the Parakeets. There was an abundance of wild turkeys, and deer and screaming loons and the Bald Eagle. White Cloud loved the mountains and the wind spirits and the forest and Mother Earth. And taught him to listen to the spirit of the wind, whispering her secrets and to see the omens in the lonely cry of the Whippoorwill and owls and read the spirits of the past and future left by our ancestors.

Alice Stokes after a party at the Applegates both the Yarbrough Dement Ancestors.. Written From "A Virginia Girl in the Civil War" 1861-1865 "Memoirs and journals written not because of their historical or political significance, but because they are to the writer the natural expression of what life has meant to him in the moment of living, have a value entirely apart from literary quality. They bring us close to the human soul - the human soul in undress. We find ourselves without preface or apology in personal, intimate relation with whatever makes the yesterday, to-day, to-morrow of the writer. When this current of events and conditions is impelled and directed by a vital and formative period in the history of a nation, we have only to follow its course to see what history can never show us, and what fiction can unfold to us only in part - how the people thought, felt, and lived who were not making history, or did not know that they were." A Virginia Girl in the Civil War 1861-1865, Being a Record of the Actual Experiences of the Wife of a Confederate Officer, collected and edited by Myrta Lockett Avary. New York, D.
