The Nichols Family of NY, MI, MO, OK

Updated May 7, 2012

About Our Family Research

I have tracked our family roots back to Auburn, NY area in the early 1800's. My gg grandparents were Edward Nichols and Abba Backus, born in Dutchess and Genesee Counties, respectively. After being married in MI (1844) they farmed in Ingham and Clinton Counties, producing a son (Gilbert Edward) and 3 possibly 4 daughters, only one (Mary Augusta) reaching adulthood and bearing children. They returned to Auburn for the remainder of their lives. Gilbert farmed in Clinton County, MI and migrated to Neosho, MO area where he had a moving business and then a bakery/grocery, in later life. Gilbert had two families. His first wife(my ggm), Harriett Jennette Adams, had 4 sons and 2 daughters; 3 sons and 1 daughter lived to adulthood. His second wife, Rosetta Kelly, had 2 sons and 3 daughters, all to lived to adulthood.
