In Newton Mississippi, Mariah Nichols is believed to have been a slave on Hardy Nichols Plantation back in 1850. On his plantation she gave birth to her first child, Spencer. Some of her grandchildren used the last name Hardy and some used the last name Nichols. She originally came from Alabama according to the 1870 census. In 1882 a marriage license was taken out for Volentine Moncrief and Moriah Nichols but the ceremony is believed to have never been performed because the certificate was not signed. Her name has been listed in the census as Mariah, Maria, Maud, & Moriah. It is believed also that a lot of the Hardy family resides in Petal, MS. If anyone has information on this family, please don't hesitate to contact me. Before Newton became a county it was Neshoba County. |
