A Uniquely American Family

About Our Family Research

I am researching, among others, the following Ancestors and Descendants of: George Washington Jackson; Rev. Charles G. Obendorf; Anthony Black and Elizabeth Craig; Anthony Lindsay and Rachel Dorsey; William Bradney and Elizabeth Gore; James Smith and Clarissa Coldwater; Tarleton Burton; and, Elizabeth Margaret Thomas. My biggest mysteries are James Smith and Clarissa Coldwater and Tarleton Burton. Where were James and Clarissa from? Where was Tarleton from and why was he in Indiana? Why did WS Lindsay go to the area around Houston, Texas and when?

My genealogical research began in 1978 when I was working in the Ripley County (Indiana) Clerk's office. One of my assignments was to send copies of requested records to those who sent inquiries. One day, someone requested a marriage record for my great-great grandfather - and I was hooked! I could remember going with my father to look at old cemeteries when I was a child. So, I called my mother to see if she knew where dad's notes and research were (he had died when I was 12). She knew exactly where the box was and gave it to me. How wonderful that I had those notes from which to start!

My family is large and diverse. We hold an annual reunion and usually have a great turn-out, weather permitting. Highlights of the reunion include a fire in the huge stone fireplace and a hayride in the late afternoon - and of course, lots of food!

I have four children and four grandchildren, work full time, and have just completed my Bachelor of Science in Business Management from Indiana Wesleyan University.
