My name is Catherine Ellen Oehl and I was adopted by Daniel Joseph Oehl and Josephine Kramer on March 21, 1970 at Spence-Chapin Services to Families and Children, in Queens, New York.
Some facts I have always known: I was born on February 17, 1970 at 9:18am, weighing 7lbs 12oz in Flushing Hospital, Flushing, NY. On February 24th, I was baptized by Rev. William E McCarthy at St. Thomas More Church on 65 East 89th Street in New York. My birthmother requested I be raised in a Catholic home.
For the next few weeks, I was in the care of a nun associated with Spence-Chapin who took care of infants waiting to be adopted. After picking me up on March 24th, my parents took me home and cared for me as I became their daughter officially on October 13, 1971.
I was raised with the knowledge of being adopted. It was and has been always a celebrated event for all of us. Throughout my life I have wanted three things: 1) See a picture of my birthmother, 2) Obtain medical information, 3) and most important to say to her "Thank you! I have never ever hated you or questioned your love for me. Your sacrifice and willingness to give me to another family have enabled me to live a very wonderful life. I hope you never worried or had concerns."
Fast forward a couple decades to 1994. I contacted Fran Singer of Spence-Chapin for any information they could provide. She provided the following non identifying information:
Birthmother's First name: Patricia, 26yrs old of Irish and German extraction, single, extremely attractive, dark brown hair, hazel eyes, fair complexion. Had a BA degree in Chemistry and MS in Biology. Taught 4yrs in local high school, involved in community activities, mature with many interests and talents. Had taken a leave of absense at the end of the pregnancy. Maternal Grandfather 54yrs old welder and grandmother died at 49 of heart attack in sleep. She had been a trained nurse.
Needless to say, I started my own search on the internet, which was relatively new for that time. I registered with New York State Adoption Register. So up until November of 2008, I had no other correspondence regarding the details of my adoption and birth family. On November 10, 2008 I received an email from Kinsolving informing me my original birth name was Ina Kerwin and my birthmother is Patricia Anne (Kerwin) Puccio(dob: 02/20/43). She is married to Dr. Joseph F. Puccio (dob: 01/10/25 married: 02/19/72) and has three childern; Nicole R (Puccio) Barron (dob: 09/15/73), Danielle F. (Puccio) Demarest (dob: 01/28/75) and Edmond C. Puccio (dob: 04/06/77).
Patricia was the only child of Daniel J. Kerwin (dob: 03/06/15, dod:06/30/78) and Rita C. Hayes (dob: ?/?/20 dod:08/31/69), who came from the Bronx and Astoria area. They lived at 32-16 167th Street, Flushing, NY, which is less than a mile from where my Dad grew up, 36-14 164th Street.
From there, Patricia moved to 98 Murray Avenue, Port Washington until 1973. The Puccio family lived at 381 Park Ave. Manhasset until 1986. Around this time the family moved to the Binghamton, NY area and continue to reside in Vestal, NY today.
The Kinsolving investigation report provided additional family information that is very helpful in tracing family roots.
Patricia was reared in Astoria/Flushing, NY. and the family was Roman Catholic. She received her BS in 1964 from Manhattan Marymount College and then attended 1964-1966 St. John's University - Flushing, Queens, NY. and received her MA in 1966 with a major in biology. Her father, Daniel J. Kerwin last lived in Rocky Point, NY and his previous address was Manhasset, NY.
Daniel was reared first in Bronx, NY. and then to Sunnyside, Queens, NY. He was born the son and youngest of three children (Ileen and Elizabeth) to Thomas Ellis Noe (dob: 11/27/1888, dod: ?/?/20 and Catherine (Keating) Noe (dob: 03/29/1889, dod: 04/?/63). Catherine remarried to Albert A. Kerwin and the children took his surname, was adopted or legally changed t
