Oesterle, Freund, McChesney, Manson and related families

Updated May 12, 2003

About Our Family Research

I am currently working on my Oesterle and Freund lines. My Oesterle's came to the Pittsburgh, PA area around 1848 from Rittershoffen, France and were in Leutenheim, France prior to that back to about 1650. Rittershoffen and Leutenheim are both part of the Bas Rhin region of Alsace, France.

While I prefer to do my own research and usually keep pretty good records of my sources (feel free to ask and I'll send them along), I have picked up bits and pieces of information on misc family from others for which I may or may not have yet verified. I welcome any comments, corrections and additions.

With that said, I'd like to give credit where due. Gary Gaertner (decendent of Frederick Oesterle b1828)is responsible for the Leutenheim Oesterle information and has also compiled an extensive file on all four of the emmigrating brothers from our line. His records are impecable. Thank you Gary for all your help and inspiration !! You can contact him at: ggaertne@nauticom.net

Now for the goodies!! Maria Odelia (Schweighauser) Oesterle, born 1789, came to America with 4 known children. They were Francois born 1816, Michel born 1819 (My gggrandfather), Jacob born 1827 and Frederick born 1828. Odelia was the second wife of Francois Joseph Osterle born 5 May 1786 and died 30 May 1829 in Rottershoffen, France. They were German Catholic and raised large families in Pittsburgh and the surrounding areas.

Philipp L.M.Freund was born 25 Oct 1825 in Hessen (possibly in Saarbrucken) Germany. He came to America on the ship Westphalia arriving in the Port of New York on 17 Sept 1846. Phillip applied for naturalization in 1851 and became a citizen in 1856 in Pittsburgh, PA. He married Rosina Herb who was born about 1830 in Purssia and they had 14 children. They resided in South Side Pittsburgh for many years with Philipp making his living as propriter of a dry goods store located on Carson Street. They are both burried in St.George's Cemetary in Pittsburgh.

Phillip's brother John Freund, born 1834,was listed in the 1880 NYC census with his wife, Margaretha, born in Baltimore, MD in 1840, and thier children. Based on the census information, they were married about 1858. John was listed as a Pastor.

to be continued.....
