The O'Gormans of New Jersey Updated January 17, 2006
About Our Family Research
My grandfather, Matthias O'Gorman, emigrated to New York in 1890 from County Cavan. He married Anne Rogers that same year and settled in Newark, New Jersey in the Down Neck section where they raised five children, namely, Nick, Hugh, my father, Mae,Anne and Rose. The ship manifest lists him as Matthias Gorman however he was named as O'Gorman upon the marriage and therefter known as O'Gorman until his death in 1944. A petition for naturalization in 1917 states he was born in 1868 at Carragho in Cavan. I know that several siblings also emigrated to the United States to the areas of Boston and Philadelphia and that a brother, Tom O'Gorman, settled in New York and is survived by family there one of whom is a priest.
