This family research lists the descendants of William Hayward & Honorah Leonard, the latter known as Granny Ashton to her family for reasons explained later. Initially we knew very little of the original family members but we produced an interesting family history with many descendants who were highly respected in their mainly farming communities. Our research indicates a total of 935 descendants from this original union. Honorah Ann Leonard arrived in Australia aboard the ship "Runnymede" in 1841, with 221 other immigrants. She was a sponsored migrant under a scheme encouraging more females to correct an imbalance of genders in the growing colony, which had a significant proportion of convicts who were transported from England. She later met and married William Hayward and they produced six children. William had earlier been transported to the colony as a felon "for stealing bread, cheese and other items"]. He was later paroled. After Williams early death Honorah moved interstate and married Willam Ashton, with whom she lived until his death in 1882 and they reared the remaining family of two boys and three girls in the north eastern district of Victoria. This is how Honorah was known as Granny Ashton to her grandchildren, and I would like to continue that title for her. This family tree records the descendants of William and Honorah and reflects about three years research and effort.
