CHILLICOTHE CONSTITUTION AUG. 21 1903
FARMER KILLED
IN A RUNAWAY
LEO TIBERGHIEN DRAGGED TO DEATH BY HORSES
Thrown From His Buggy
and Mixed up in the Wheels in Some Unknown Manner
Leo Tiberghien , a prominent Jackson township farmer, was killed in
arunaway on the ro a d leading to his home at about 3:30 Saturday
afternoon.
Mr. Tiberghien was on his way home from Chillicothe and was
drivingalone in a buggy. So m e where in the bottoms his team became
frightenedand ran. No one saw the beginning of th e r unaway.
Tiberghien was thrown out and his body mixed up in the wheels
orbetween them in some wa y . When his team passed George Mast ,
aneighbor, on the road, he saw Mr.. Tiberghien unde r , the buggy.
This team passed Tiberghien's home . A mile further on the road
hisdaughter saw the te a m running by and saw her father mixed up in
thewheels. She ran out in the road and foun d p ieces of her
father'sblood-stained coat and shirt. She then went to Springhill
for aid.
The team ran to the first crossroads and turned west.
Tiberghien'sbody was finally thro w n against the fence, where it was
found shortlyafterward. It was evident that he was dea d l ong
before he was thrownagainst the fence. His body was terribly torn
and bruised, and o n e sideof his face was entirely gone.
Tiberghien lived about three miles southeast of Springhill. He
wasabout 70 years old.
The funeral of the late Leo Tiberghien , whose unfortunate death in
arunaway was announc e d in Saturday's Constitution, was held from
thefamily residence Sunday afternoon at thre e o 'clock near Graham's
mill.
The few words together with
the Masonic rites were conducted by Elder J. E. Pardonner, Interment
wasmade in the famil y l ot on the farm. The funeral was one of the
mostlargely attended in the county.
The deceased was nearly seventy-one years of age. He possessed
thedistinction of being th e oldest Mason in the north west of
Livingstoncounty. He was a pioneer citizen of this count y and was
well knownthroughout the north part of Missouri.
Five children survive their parents death, one girl and four
boys.They are Miss Duck Tiber ghien and W. L., J. B.., J. S., and F.
M.Tiberghien, all of whom live near Springhill.
A peculiar instance in the run-away, in which Mr. Tiberghein lost
hislife, was the fac t t hat the horses ran past the house and
circledaround, dragging the inanimate body to the s po t where it was
eventuallyburied,
The members of the family are prostrated over the suddenness of
theirfather's untimely d e ath. He had been repeatedly warned not to
drive theyoung team, but he had always insiste d t hat he was able
to managethem. The manner which the horses became frightened is
still i n d oubt.It was reported that they became frightened at a
camp near Graham'smill, but the me m bers of the party deny the
statement and say that theteam went past the location of the te n t
in a walk.
When the body of the dead farmer was taken from under the wheels
ofthe buggy, in whic h h e had been driving, the clothing from the
waistupward had been entirely stripped from i t an d the lacerations
of theflesh were horrible.
