The first Orton of our family to come to Australia was Wesleyan Missionary, the Rev.Joseph Rennard Orton, who arrived in Sydney, New South Wales early in 1832. He served the church in Sydney, Hobart and Melbourne, before departing Australia. He was very ill, and died on the voyage, in 1842. His youngest son, Jabez, was born in Melbourne in the previous December. Joseph Orton's widow, Sarah Jane Orton (nee Bragg)later returned to New South Wales, and all of her surviving children lived the remainder of their lives in Australia. The first daughter, Eleanor, married Robert Bourne, and they lived at one time in Bathurst. The youngest child, Jabez, married Annie Jope in Melbourne in 1872. Her only surviving child was Joseph Richard Orton, my grandfather. Annie died during, or shortly after, the childbirth. Jabez re-married, and his second wife gave him several sons, several of whom lived in Melbourne. I have much more information about this family, much of it assembled by the late Dr. Noel Orton, of Melbourne.
