About Our Family Research

Nancy O'Shields was born August 17th. 1804 she was my great-great grandmother. Nancy O'Shields was a nurse in a Doctors Office in Spartanburg the Doctor was Dr. John Smith which later he changed his name to Doctor John Winn- Smith why/ Nancy lived on a large plantation 272 acres of farm land which this was called the O'Shields Plantation. This plantation had smoke houses and this is where they would hang their meats. Back in those days they had slaves and they done most of the work. Follow me as we go down history road and i do mean history road. There have been lots and i mean lots of those that do research on this family of O'Shields but this is my family and i hope to bring this out the truth and all the truth. Nancy O'Shields did have children she had four sons and one daughter. Let me name these children in the order in which they were born. Here we go with the oldest child that being William Paschal O'Shields born July fourth 1824. Next was Samuel Drayton O'Shields born1825' Wiley Drayton O'Shields born 1832' Polly Ann O'Shields was born 1833' Last but not least was Isaac Scott O'Shields born 1834 or 1835. This is the list of all of her children. Now her sons got up or formed what was called the O'Shields String Band and this was a very good band. These brothers went many places with the band and always at the O'Shields Reunion. Yes they enjoyed playing the old Irish tunes. Everyone loved to hear them play as others would come to listen to them. In 1857 William Paschal O'Shields was in Pickens SC. Wiley Drayton stayed on the plantation with his wife Julia and this is where he raised his family. Polly Ann O'Shields got married to an Epps and she moved from Spartanburg and look at this Nancy her mother moved in with her only daughter in Pickens must have been 1860 or after. Isaac Scott O'Shields moved to Georgia I do not know where that Samuel Drayton O'Shields went. W.G.S. O'Shields was the youngest child of Wiley Drayton O'Shields. He also was County Auditor for many years and it has been told that he could write with both hands and talk at the same time. My daddy was the youngest child of W.G.S. O'Shields. My daddys name Denny Leonard O'Shields Sr He was married to Lillie Belle Riddle was the youngest child of Mr. and Mrs. Calvin M. Riddle. And Lillie Belle was my mother of course. Both mother and daddy were born in 1900 daddy's birthdate July 21' and mother was March the 5th. Now mother and daddy had eight children which three were born dead. I have two baby brothers buried next to grandaddy's grave and a baby sister. They are buried at Mt. Calvary P. Church Cemetery in Roebuck S.C. Five children lived the oldest child was Denny Leonard O'Shields Jr. born in Spartanburg 1920 he died 1981 at 61 years of age. Next was Mildred O'Shields born in Spartanburg 1923. and she died at the age of 65 in 1988. Roderick O'Shields born in Spartanburg won't give the date of birth because he is still living. I was born in Greenville Charles Edward O'Shields Feb' 16th. 1940. Last of the children born in the home Patrick Ryan O'Shields was born in Greenville S.C.
